New Advances in Diabetic Wound Care and Amputation Prevention

Diabetes Mellitus is the leading cause of non-traumatic Lower Extremity (LE) Amputations in the USA and the rest of the world. The impact of LE amputation on an individual is devastating. Following amputation of the leg, 2/3 of diabetic patients die within 5 yrs. Energy expenditure of ambulation is higher for LE amputees when compared to non-disabled peers. This contributes to a sedentary lifestyle. This lifestyle is listed as the major contributing factor for the increase in secondary diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and adult-onset diabetes (Type II).
The purpose of this lecture is to recognize and treat patients with lower extremity wounds that can eventually lead to LE amputations. The Attendees will learn about new advances in wound care products and treatments. Also, he will discuss US Government assisted programs to prevent amputations among diabetics.
